57th Grammy Awards: Best and Worst Red Carpet Looks

The much-anticipated 57th Grammy Awards of 2015 premiered this past Sunday with many tuning in to see who walked home with the title as the best in their respected music category. As viewers watched for guest speakers to reveal the name under the envelope, I simply waited for one segment in particular: celebrity arrivals on the Grammy’s Red Carpet. With countless years of watching my great-grandmother sew amazing pieces, I channeled my inner judge from Project Runway and expertise advice from my great-grandmother.

As I got comfortable to marvel at and critique this year’s fashion from the most notable artists in the music industry, it became apparent that this year’s ensembles consisted of a mix of simplicity, glamour and the expected oddness from a select few of individuals. Yet, despite the variety I gravitated to one recurring theme this year: black and/or white dresses.  Black is commonly associated with words such as authority, competence, timeless while white is coupled with simplicity, cleanliness and a sense of balance. Alone or coupled together, my top favorite stars of the night dominated the carpet.

To begin, Ciara was styled in a dramatic one shoulder Alexandre Vauthier design, coupled with a gold belt, black pumps and slicked-back hair. Although some criticized that the ruffles were borderline costumey, I have to disagree! A woman can never go wrong with an all black combination!

In my opinion, Kat Graham was deemed the game changer of the night. Adorned in a Yanina Couture sheer and white combination gown, Graham graced the carpet with a slicked bun, white heels and minimal jewelry. The use of minimal jewelry made the audience draw more attention to the flower branching out from the waist. I truly loved this gown and look forward to seeing her looks at upcoming shows!

Now, it would not be fair to mention these women without highlighting rap’s female Queen, Nicki Minaj. Since the release of her third album, The Pinkprint, Minaj’s style has gone from corky and wild to very sophisticated. This night, she donned a gleaming, fringed Tom Ford dress with a plunging neckline. Topped with slicked-back hair and diamonds galore, Minaj made another statement that proved that her fashion sense is one to continue to fall for!

Of course, there was a splash of color from Taylor Swift, gracing the Grammy’s with her aqua, ombre Elie Saab custom halter dress. America’s sweetheart dress accented with fuschia heels and statement earrings definitely gave her fans something different! High-lows can be tricky to pull off, but Swift managed to effortlessly wear this on the carpet!

Who did not make the list? Well, there were quite a few: Chris Brown, Rihanna, Zendaya, and Pharrell Williams. I’ll let you be the judge of why they did not make the cut! You can check out the images below for yourself and put your critiquing skills to the test!
